Papua New Guinea, located just north of Australia, is an island state that covers half the island of New Guinea, with the other half made up of the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua

In Papua New Guinea (PNG), coffee farming is predominantly carried out by smallholder farmers nestled in the country's highlands. High altitudes and humid equatorial climate provide an ideal environment for coffee cultivation. Farmers implement traditional techniques, such as hand-picking, to ensure quality, and intercropping, to promote agroforestry and enrich soil fertility. In PNG coffee production isn't just about cultivation, rather supporting the community.

In the highland areas expect notes of lively acidity and complexity with stone fruits (peach and apricot), orange or lemon zest.

In the lowland areas expect darker notes, more rustic flavours.

Eastern and Western Highlands

Production in the Western Highlands is densly populated and landlocked. It mountainous with fertile, interlocking valleys making it a key growing area in the PNG.

Production in the Eastern Highlands is home to many smallholders' coffee farmers and is the second largest coffee-producing province in the PNG located right in the center of the country.

Meet the Producer: Jerry Kapka

At Langdon Coffee Merchants we are proud to have partnered with one of PNG’s top producers, Jerry Kapka, founder of Kongo Coffee. Jerry has been pivotal to the continual improvement of Simbu’s coffee quality, supporting growers through fair pricing as well as access to education on plant maintenance.

Jerry’s positive relationship has expanded to the local community through the establishment of the Jerry Kapka Foundation, where a portion of Kongo Coffee’s profiles are channelled into community advancement projects. The worthy causes each year include funding schools that make education accessible for all, hospitals that provide complex medical procedures and medicine for women and children, and the introduction of youth groups.

Kongo encompasses the wider Simbu region, allowing farmers to contribute coffee grown year-round and providing a vital income link for coffee producing families. Simbu is prized for its unique profile, bringing crisp acidity, with well refined fruit tones and a sweet finish.
