Mount Elgon
Mount Elgon, on Uganda’s eastern border with Kenya, is East Africa’s oldest volcano. Coffee farms thrive on its forested slopes, with harvests running June – December at lower altitudes and July – February higher up. Cherries are hand-picked and washed, often transported by donkeys due to steep terrain.
Bugisu, on the western slopes, is known for fruity, wine-like coffees, though many beans are sweet and citrusy with raisin and fig notes. Organic farming is common, and initiatives like stumping help boost yields.
